THE UNPROFITABLE PROFIT: GAINS THAT BANKRUPT THE SOUL PART 12: FINAL LAP: THE PROFITABLE LIFE — WHEN THE SOUL IS PRESERVED AND REWARDED
📖 Genesis 2:16–17
“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die.’”
Before the fall, there was already a voice — and a choice.
Eden was not just a place of beauty; it was a classroom of obedience.
In the center of the garden, God didn’t only plant trees — He planted truth.
The same voice that formed Adam now instructed him.
Creation began with “God said,” and communion continued with “God commanded.”
The voice that creates also directs — and the moment we stop listening, creation begins to unravel.
1. Divine Voice: The Compass of the Garden
Eden’s perfection didn’t make Adam independent — it made him dependent.
Even in paradise, he needed instruction.
Why? Because abundance without alignment breeds confusion.
God’s command in verse 16 wasn’t about restriction; it was orientation.
The voice of God keeps you centered — it helps you enjoy blessings without being consumed by them.
When the voice stops guiding you, choices start misleading you.
2. The Command Was Communication, Not Control
Notice the tenderness of God’s tone: “You are free to eat from any tree…”
That’s not a threat — that’s a loving father setting order.
The instruction came as a conversation, not a condemnation.
God wasn’t policing Adam; He was parenting him.
And every true father disciplines by direction.
So when God gives you instructions — about a relationship, an opportunity, a habit, or a place — it’s not to suffocate you, but to safeguard you.
3. Every Choice Is an Echo of a Voice
Eden teaches us that disobedience never starts with action — it starts with interpretation.
The serpent didn’t force Eve to sin; he reshaped her understanding of God’s word.
That’s how many believers lose spiritual stability — not by denying God’s voice outright, but by editing what He said.
The enemy doesn’t need to silence the voice; he only needs to make you question it.
So before every decision, ask yourself:
Whose voice am I echoing — God’s or my feelings’?
4. The Sound That Sustains Seasons
In the mist before the rain, before harvests and rivers, there was a sound — God speaking.
Fruitfulness has always been tied to hearing.
Jesus would later say, “My sheep hear My voice.”
If Eden was sustained by obedience, your life will be sustained by consistency in listening.
When you keep your ear tuned to God’s whispers, even storms can’t uproot you.
Reflection
Every garden God plants in your life — your career, your ministry, your family, your calling — has both a voice and a choice.
The voice instructs; the choice confirms trust.
When you honor the voice, your choices bear fruit.
🌱 What has God been whispering to you in this season?
🌱 Are you listening — or leaning on logic?
Prayer
Father, thank You for still speaking. Help me not to let the noise of life drown Your gentle commands. Teach me to recognize Your tone in the midst of distractions. Give me grace to obey swiftly and trust Your direction fully. May my choices echo Your voice and bring glory to Your name. Amen.
Next Up — Part 12: Boundaries of Blessing: The Tree, The Choice, and The Trust
God’s “no” in Eden wasn’t a punishment; it was protection. In the next part, we’ll explore how divine limits preserve purpose and how trust defines true freedom.
