THE REDEMPTIVE POWER OF GOD: ELISHA AND THE WIDOW'S JAR OF OIL PART 5: THE DISCIPLINE OF THE SECRET PLACE — WHEN MIRACLES REQUIRE CLOSED DOORS 2 KINGS 4:4-5 In Part 4, we learned that miracles often involve movement, obedience, and action. The widow was instructed to go out, borrow vessels, and gather what was needed. We saw that God’s instructions often require participation, and that obedience is a key that unlocks divine provision. Now the story moves from the outside world into the inside space of encounter. After the vessels were gathered, something very significant happens in the process of the miracle. The next instruction is not about movement—but about isolation. God begins to shift the widow from public obedience to private encounter. In 2 Kings 4:4-5, Elisha gives a new instruction: “ Go in and shut the door behind you and your sons … ” This moment is deeply spiritual. Before the oil flows, the door must be closed. This teaches us that some dimensions of God’s power are ...

THE GOOD SHEPHERD’S PROVISION: THE KEY OF PLANNING PART 6: THE CRY AT MIDNIGHT — PREPARING FOR UNEXPECTED VISITORS

THE GOOD SHEPHERD’S PROVISION: THE KEY OF PLANNING
PART 6: THE CRY AT MIDNIGHT — PREPARING FOR UNEXPECTED VISITORS

Matthew 25:6 (Key Phrase)

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’”

Devotional Introduction (real-life story)

Just a few weeks after marriage, my wife and I made a decision that seemed right at the time. Every bit of money we had was channeled into her school fees and hostel accommodation. It was an investment in the future, and we felt settled—until dawn came.

That morning, my wife suddenly fell ill.

There I was—newly married, responsible, concerned, and staring at a reality I hadn’t planned for. The little cash left with us could barely cover anything, let alone hospital bills. Fear didn’t knock; it walked right in.

By God’s mercy, after several calls to doctors my wife knew—being a health professional herself—a doctor gave medical prescriptions over the phone. I bought the medication with what we had, and to the glory of God, she recovered fully.

That moment taught me something I will never forget:

Life does not announce its emergencies.

In the previous lesson, we learnt about the jar—capacity and personal responsibility. We saw that oil must be stored, protected, and managed. Passion without structure leaks, and preparation without systems collapses under pressure.

Today, Jesus introduces us to the moment when preparation is tested—the cry at midnight.

Devotional Thought

Unexpected moments reveal planned lives

The cry at midnight represents unplanned visitors:

sickness

emergencies

sudden opportunities

crises

deadlines

Death or loss

The virgins were not warned about the exact timing of the bridegroom’s arrival. They were only told to be ready.

Just like life.

That dawn when sickness showed up in my home, it didn’t ask if we were financially prepared. It simply arrived. What saved us was not abundance, but prior relationships, wisdom, and God’s mercy.

The cry did not create oil.

It did not build capacity.

It only revealed what had already been prepared—or what was missing.

Planning is not a lack of faith.

Planning is stewardship.

Pause And Reflect

What unexpected visitor am I unprepared for?

Have I confused faith with assumption?

What areas of my life lack emergency capacity?

Life Application

Spiritually

Faith prepares before pressure arrives.

Prayer built early becomes strength in emergencies. God’s mercy meets prepared hearts.

Academically

Success collapses without backup planning.

Delays expose weak systems. Prepared students respond, not panic.

In Life

Emergencies don’t wait for convenience.

Small reserves can save big moments.

Planning today protects peace tomorrow.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to plan wisely without fear. Help me prepare for seasons I cannot predict. Give me wisdom to steward resources, relationships, and responsibilities well. Let unexpected moments meet a prepared heart. Amen.
