THE UNPROFITABLE PROFIT: GAINS THAT BANKRUPT THE SOUL PART 12: FINAL LAP: THE PROFITABLE LIFE — WHEN THE SOUL IS PRESERVED AND REWARDED
Ezekiel 8:5-7
In Part 1, we saw how God lifted Ezekiel by the Spirit and took him on a vision tour to Jerusalem, showing him the glory of the Lord at the temple. That was just the beginning. Now, in Part 2, God begins to uncover what is hidden inside His house. The first shocking sight is at the very entrance of the temple gate.
God told Ezekiel: “Son of man, look toward the north.” And when he looked, he saw an image of jealousy standing at the entrance of the gate — an idol that provoked the Lord to anger. Imagine! Right at the temple entrance where people were supposed to prepare their hearts to meet God, there was an idol sitting like a guard of honor.
This wasn’t just a wooden or stone statue; it symbolized how the people had welcomed other gods into the house of Yahweh. The temple — built for the Holy One — had become a home for idols. That’s why God asked Ezekiel, “Do you see what they are doing, the great abominations… so that I should go far away from My sanctuary?” (v.6).
Application for Today:
The temple gate represents the entrance of our lives — our hearts, our minds, even the entrance of our churches. When idols such as lust, pride, power, money, and fame sit at the entrance, they provoke God’s jealousy.
Many churches today have “images of jealousy” at their gates:
Some Leaders are more concerned about titles, outfits, and money than God’s presence.
Some Choir masters and members are engaging in immorality, making the choir a place of scandals instead of worship.
Politicians and businessmen are given first seats in church, while the poor and faithful are ignored.
Just like in Ezekiel’s time, God is asking us: “Do you see this?”
Check the “gates” of your life. What do you allow in through your eyes, ears, and heart? If it doesn’t glorify God, remove it now. Guard your temple entrance. If we want God’s glory to return, the idols must fall.
Reflection
God’s house is meant to be a place of holiness and His glory, not a marketplace for idols. What idols are sitting at the gate of your life, your family, or your church?
Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to see the images of jealousy in my life. Remove every idol that provokes You to anger. May my heart and my church become a true dwelling place of Your glory. Amen.
