THE UNPROFITABLE PROFIT: GAINS THAT BANKRUPT THE SOUL PART 12: FINAL LAP: THE PROFITABLE LIFE — WHEN THE SOUL IS PRESERVED AND REWARDED
Ezekiel 8:17-18
“He said to me, ‘Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually arouse my anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose! Therefore I will deal with them in anger; I will not look on them with pity or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen to them.’”
Recap of Part 5
In Part 5, we witnessed twenty-five men — leaders who should have been examples of worship — turn their backs on the temple and bow to the rising sun in the east. It was a picture of misplaced devotion: honoring creation while rejecting the Creator.
The Final Verdict
Now, God delivers His conclusion. After exposing every layer — the idol at the gate, the elders in their secret chambers, the women weeping for Tammuz, and the men bowing to the sun — the Lord asks Ezekiel: “Is this a small thing?”
The corruption in the temple was not isolated; it had spilled into the land. Violence filled the streets, hearts were hardened, and worship became mockery (“putting the branch to the nose” — a gesture of contempt before God). The people would eventually cry out in distress, but God declared He would not hear them, because their repentance was not genuine.
🔍 Analogically:
The temple filled with idols: A believer or church polluted with compromise, trying to mix holiness with hidden sin.
Violence in the land: When private sin spreads and poisons society.
Branch to the nose: Empty religious gestures that insult God instead of honoring Him.
God not listening: The sobering reminder that grace has limits when hearts persist in rebellion.
Reflection
The most tragic moment is not when enemies surround us, but when God’s glory departs. Ezekiel 8 closes with this warning: when God exposes sin but we refuse to turn, judgment follows. For us today, the call is clear — keep your temple pure, guard your worship, and never trade His presence for idols.
🙏 Prayer
Lord, search my heart and expose every hidden idol. Turn me away from empty rituals and false worship. Keep my heart sincere, my hands clean, and my temple pure. May Your presence never depart from my life, my family, and my generation. Amen.
