THE REDEMPTIVE POWER OF GOD: ELISHA AND THE WIDOW'S JAR OF OIL PART 5: THE DISCIPLINE OF THE SECRET PLACE — WHEN MIRACLES REQUIRE CLOSED DOORS
Numbers 10:29-32
Moses said to Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, his father-in-law, “We are journeying to the place the Lord promised to give us. Come with us, and we will treat you well, for the Lord has spoken good concerning Israel.”
But Hobab replied, “I will not go, but return to my own land and family.”
Then Moses said, “Please do not leave us. You know how we are to camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes. And if you go with us, whatever good the Lord does to us, we will do
to you.”
RECAP OF PART 7: Shared Blessings, Shared Journey
We discussed the importance of Shared Blessings, Shared Journey. Moses made it clear that anyone who walks with you in faith and labor should also share in your reward. We were reminded that generosity and gratitude are part of God’s divine design for kingdom relationships.
Despite Moses’ passionate invitation, Hobab initially said no. “I will not go,” he replied. Rejection can be disheartening—especially when we expect a “yes.” But what do you do when someone you count on declines to walk the journey with you?
Rejection Isn't Always Final, and It Isn't Always Fatal
Hobab’s “no” in verse 30 could have marked the end of the conversation. But Moses didn't give up—he urged again. There are times when people say no, and we have to discern whether to let go or gently press forward.
Scripture Highlight:
“But he said, ‘I will not go; I am going back to my own land and my own people.’”– Numbers 10:30
Life Application:
Sometimes the people we expect to help us may not be willing—or ready. It’s not always personal. Don't let temporary rejection make you abandon your journey. Sometimes people need space, encouragement, or a different perspective. Trust God to send the right help, even when some doors close.
Hobab’s “no” teaches us resilience. Not every hand will hold yours, and not every voice will echo your vision. But keep moving. Trust that God knows how to reroute the right people—or raise up new ones.
REFLECTION:
Have you faced a “no” in a season you expected support?
Did you give up on the person—or the vision?
Is God teaching you to trust Him even in declined partnerships?
Call to Action:
Revisit that “no” you received—ask God if it’s time to let go or try again with wisdom.
Encourage someone who might feel rejected or abandoned in their vision.
Strengthen your confidence in God’s ability to provide, even when people say no.
PRAYER:
Father, teach me to respond with grace when I hear “no.” Help me not to be discouraged when my expectations are unmet. Strengthen my heart to pursue Your will, even when others walk away. Surround me with the right people for the journey. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
🔜 Next Part – Part 9: Honor the Compass in Others
Not everyone is called to walk the entire journey with you—but some are called to point the way. In Part 9, we’ll explore how to recognize and honor the “Hobabs” in your life—those whose wisdom, experience, or insight can serve as divine compasses
Their presence might not be loud, but their discernment could shift everything.
Do you know how to honor the guides God sends—even when they don’t lead the crowd?
💬 Let’s Talk
Have you ever overlooked someone’s quiet wisdom because you were expecting louder support?
Who in your life might be a “compass”—a person whose guidance, not presence, is what God wants you to honor?
How do you usually show value for the hidden wisdom of others?
Drop your answers. Let's keep the connection alive.
Thank you!
