THE POOL OF MERCY: WHEN JESUS STEPS INTO BROKEN SYSTEMS
PART 9: THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS OF AGONY – THE GOD OF RESTORATION
John 5:5— (KJV)
"And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years."
In Part 8, "The Hopeless – When Waiting Steals Your Expectation," we discovered that hopelessness is one of the greatest battles a person can face. We learned that prolonged disappointment can weaken faith, drain joy, and make temporary situations feel permanent. Yet Jesus came to Bethesda to remind us that no situation is beyond His reach. Where Christ is present, hope can rise again.
Today, we turn our attention to one particular man among the multitude—a man whose suffering had lasted for thirty-eight years. His story reveals the power of God's timing, the reality of long seasons, and the restoration that comes through an encounter with Jesus.
John does not tell us this man's name.
He does not tell us his family background.
He does not tell us his occupation.
He simply tells us one thing:
He had been suffering for thirty-eight years.
Those words carry the weight of a lifetime.
Thirty-eight years means:
- years of waiting.
- years of disappointment.
- years of depending on others.
- years of watching others receive what he desired.
- years of wondering if anything would ever change.
His condition had become part of his identity. But what people knew as his limitation, Jesus saw as an opportunity for restoration.
The Significance Of Thirty-eight Years
The number thirty-eight reminds us that God sees the length of our struggles. Sometimes people judge situations from the outside:
"Why has he not moved on?"
"Why is she still struggling?"
"Why has nothing changed?"
But only God knows the weight of someone's journey. Jesus knew exactly how long this man had suffered. Before Jesus spoke to him, He already knew his story.
What Thirty-eight Years Represents
1. Long Seasons of Delay
Some battles last longer than expected.
Some prayers seem unanswered for years.
Some doors appear permanently closed.
But a long season does not mean God has forgotten you.
2. The Pain of Missed Opportunities
The man explained:
"Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool..." — John 5:7
His words reveal a painful reality. He was not only dealing with sickness; he was dealing with helplessness.
He had been close to his breakthrough many times, yet unable to access it.
3. The Burden of Lost Time
Thirty-eight years represents seasons that cannot be recovered naturally.
Time lost.
Opportunities missed.
Years that seemed wasted.
But what humanity cannot restore, God can redeem. Hallelujah!
Jesus, The Restorer Of Wasted Years
When Jesus arrived, He did not apologize for coming late. He did not explain why the healing had taken so long. He simply stepped into the man's situation and released restoration.
This reveals a powerful truth:
God is not limited by how long the problem has existed.
Thirty-eight years of suffering could not resist one moment of divine intervention.
Practical Lessons
1. Your waiting period does not cancel God's plan.
God can still fulfill His purpose despite years of delay.
2. Never allow your condition to become your identity.
The man had an infirmity, but he was not defined by his infirmity.
3. God sees forgotten people.
Others may overlook you, but Jesus knows your location and your story.
4. Restoration is possible through Christ.
What seems permanently lost can be restored by the power of God.
The story of the man at Bethesda teaches us that God is not intimidated by long battles.
Thirty-eight years could not defeat God's mercy. A broken system could not stop God's intervention.
A forgotten man could not escape the attention of Jesus. The same Jesus who walked into Bethesda is still walking into lives today. He knows the years of pain, the silent tears, and the battles nobody else sees.
When Jesus steps in, the length of your struggle becomes a testimony of His restoring power. Hallelujah!
Key Takeaway
No matter how long the struggle has lasted, one encounter with Jesus can restore what years have taken away.
