PART 7: THE FALL OF THE FLESH

Judges 3:21–22 (NLT)

"Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled out the dagger strapped to his right thigh, and plunged it into the king's belly. The dagger went so deep that the handle disappeared beneath the king's fat. So Ehud did not pull out the dagger, and the king's bowels emptied."

In Part 6, we learned that what King Eglon expected to be a secret conversation became a divine appointment. Ehud stood before the king not with his own agenda, but with a message from God. The room had been emptied. The message had been delivered. The king had risen from his seat.

Now, the moment of decision had come.

The hidden weapon that had been prepared in secret would now be used openly. This was not an act of personal revenge.

It was God's appointed judgment against a king who had oppressed His people for eighteen years.

The Hand God Chose Finally Moved

The Bible says,

"Ehud reached with his left hand..."

This detail is not accidental.

The very hand that Scripture highlighted in Judges 3:15 now becomes the hand God uses to accomplish His purpose.

What many may have overlooked became God's instrument of deliverance. God often turns what the world considers ordinary, weak, or unusual into a testimony of His power.

Ehud did not need someone else's hand. He simply surrendered the hand God had given him. Likewise, God is not asking you to become someone else. He is asking you to surrender who you are to Him.

The Hidden Weapon Fulfilled Its Purpose

For several parts of this journey, we have watched Ehud prepare.

He made the dagger.

He hid the dagger.

He waited patiently.

He observed carefully.

He obeyed completely.

Now came the appointed moment.

A weapon hidden forever would never bring deliverance. Preparation is essential, but preparation must eventually lead to action.

Many believers know God's Word.

They attend church.

They pray.

They prepare.

But when God opens the door, fear keeps them from acting. Faith is not only believing God. Faith also obeys when the time comes.

Why Does The Bible Say Eglon Was Very Fat?

Earlier, Scripture described Eglon as "very fat."

This description primarily helps us understand the historical event that follows. It explains why the dagger disappeared into his body.

At the same time, many believers have also seen in Eglon a picture of the sinful nature—not because the text explicitly says he symbolizes the flesh, but because his oppressive rule provides a fitting spiritual illustration.

The flesh constantly demands to be fed.

It is never satisfied.

It seeks control.

It opposes God's will.

Just as Eglon ruled over Israel through oppression, sin seeks to rule over our lives. Unchecked sin always grows stronger. What we continually feed eventually begins to control us.

Sin Cannot Be Entertained

Ehud did not negotiate with Eglon.

He did not attempt to make peace with the king who had enslaved God's people.

Likewise, believers are never called to make peace with sin.

The apostle Paul writes:

"So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you..." — Colossians 3:5 (NLT)

Notice the language.

Paul does not say to manage sin.

He says to put it to death.

This is not speaking about harming ourselves, but about refusing to allow sinful desires to rule our lives. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers are called to reject whatever opposes God's holiness.

The Word Of God Strikes At The Heart

Ehud's double-edged dagger reminds us again of the Word of God.

Hebrews declares:

"For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword..." — Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)

God's Word does not merely touch the surface.

It reaches the heart.

It exposes hidden motives.

It convicts us of sin.

It cuts away what does not belong.

Healing sometimes begins with God's loving conviction.

Before He restores us, He often removes what is destroying us.

True Deliverance Requires Decisive Obedience

Ehud did not hesitate when the appointed moment arrived. He acted in obedience to God's assignment.

There are moments in every believer's life when God calls for decisive action.

Not tomorrow.

Not someday.

Today.

Perhaps God is calling you to forgive.

To repent.

To end a sinful habit.

To restore a broken relationship.

To answer His call.

Delayed obedience is still disobedience.

When God says, "Now," faith responds.

Practical Lessons

1. God can use what makes you different for His glory.

Never underestimate what God has placed in your life.

2. Preparation must be followed by obedience.

God prepares us so that we will be ready when our moment arrives.

3. Do not feed what God has called you to overcome.

Sin grows stronger when it is continually entertained.

4. God's Word reaches the deepest places of the heart.

Allow Scripture to correct, cleanse, and transform you daily.

Prayer

1. Father, help me to put to death every sinful desire that competes with Your will for my life.

2. Lord Jesus, let Your Word penetrate my heart, exposing and removing everything that dishonors You.

3. Father, give me the courage to obey You immediately whenever You call me to act.

4. Lord, strengthen my spirit so that I will not be ruled by the desires of the flesh but by the power of the Holy Spirit.

5. Father, let every victory You give me bring freedom to others and glory to Your holy name.
