PART 8: SHUTTING THE DOOR BEHIND YOU

Judges 3:23 (NLT)

"Then Ehud closed and locked the doors of the room and escaped down the latrine."

In Part 7, we witnessed the fall of King Eglon. The hidden weapon was finally revealed, and God's judgment was executed against the oppressor of Israel. We learned that victory over the flesh requires decisive obedience and that God's Word cuts away everything that stands against His purpose.

But the story does not end with Eglon's fall. Before Ehud escaped, he did something that many readers overlook. He closed and locked the doors of the upper room.

At first glance, this may seem like an insignificant detail. Yet, as we have seen throughout this series, God never wastes words. Every detail recorded in Scripture invites us to look deeper.

A Wise Exit Is Part Of A Great Victory

Ehud did not panic after completing his assignment.

He remained calm.

He thought strategically.

He closed the doors.

He locked them.

Then he escaped.

His mission was not only to defeat the enemy but also to ensure that the victory could not be immediately interrupted.

Wisdom is not only knowing how to begin well. Wisdom also knows how to finish well.

Many people know how to start battles but do not know how to secure the victory God has given them.

Close The Door To What God Has Delivered You From

Spiritually, shutting the door reminds us of the importance of closing every entrance through which sin seeks to return.

When God delivers us, He calls us to leave the old life behind. Too often, people pray for freedom but leave the door open. They return to the same friendships that led them into sin.

The same habits.

The same temptations.

The same compromises.

The same environments.

Then they wonder why they struggle again.

True repentance does not merely walk away. It closes the door behind.

Don't Give The Enemy An Open Door

The apostle Paul gives this instruction:

"...don't give the devil a foothold."

— Ephesians 4:27 (NLT)

A foothold begins with an open door.

Bitterness.

Unforgiveness.

Secret sin.

Pride.

Compromise.

Unchecked desires.

If these doors remain open, the enemy looks for opportunities to regain influence.

Ehud teaches us that after victory comes vigilance. Protect what God has done in your life.

Some Doors Should Never Be Reopened

There are doors God intentionally closes.

There are also doors He asks us to close.

The door to an unhealthy relationship.

The door to addiction.

The door to revenge.

The door to bitterness.

The door to hidden sin.

Sometimes we ask God to set us free while secretly keeping the key in our pocket.

But lasting freedom requires decisive separation from what once enslaved us.

Jesus Calls Us To Abide In Freedom

Our victory is not sustained by willpower alone. It is sustained by walking daily with Christ.

Jesus said,

"So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free." — John 8:36 (NLT)

Freedom is not simply escaping bondage. It is remaining in the liberty Christ has given us. Ehud closed the door behind him because his assignment in that room was finished.

Likewise, when Christ delivers us, we are not called to keep revisiting the life He has rescued us from.

A Closed Door Prepares The Way For The Next Assignment

Ehud did not stay in the upper room celebrating his victory. He had more work to do. Israel was still waiting. There was a nation to rally. A battle to lead. A people to deliver. Sometimes we remain too long in yesterday's victories or yesterday's failures.

God says, "Close that chapter. I still have an assignment ahead of you."

Faith keeps moving forward.

Practical Lessons

1. Secure the victories God gives you.

Do not leave open the doors that can undo what God has accomplished.

2. True repentance closes the door to the old life.

Freedom grows stronger when we refuse to return to former bondage.

3. Do not give the enemy a foothold.

Guard your heart, your mind, and your daily walk with Christ.

4. Every ending prepares you for a new beginning.

Close the chapter God has finished so you can embrace the assignment He has prepared.

4. Lord, strengthen me to guard my heart, my mind, and my walk with You each day.

5. Father, as I close every ungodly chapter, lead me confidently into the new assignments You have prepared for me.
