PART 5: NOT EVERY BATTLE REQUIRES A CROWD

 Judges 3:17–19 (NLT)

"He brought the tribute to Eglon, who was very fat. After delivering the payment, Ehud started home with those who had helped carry the tribute. But when Ehud reached the stone idols near Gilgal, he turned back. He came to Eglon and said, 'I have a secret message for you.' So the king commanded his servants, 'Be quiet!' and sent them all out of the room."

In Part 4, we discovered that before Ehud confronted King Eglon, he secretly prepared a double-edged dagger and hid it under his clothing. We learned that God often prepares His servants in private before revealing them in public, and that the greatest weapons are often the ones the world cannot see.

Now the story takes another remarkable turn. Before Ehud carried out his assignment, he first sent the people who had accompanied him away.

This was not an act of fear. It was an act of wisdom. Sometimes, the greatest victories are won not by gathering more people, but by knowing when to stand alone.

Turning Back At Gilgal

After delivering the tribute, Ehud began the journey home. Everything appeared to be finished. His assignment seemed complete.

But when he reached the stone idols near Gilgal, he stopped. Then he turned back. This was more than a change of direction. It was a moment of divine conviction.

Standing before those idols may have reminded Ehud of how deeply Israel had fallen into oppression and how the land that belonged to God had become surrounded by symbols of idolatry and foreign domination.

Sometimes God uses what we see around us to awaken what He has already placed within us. There are moments when we cannot simply keep walking as though everything is normal.

A Leader Who Protected His People

Before Ehud turned back, he first made sure the men who had accompanied him were safely on their way home. He did not involve them in a mission they had not been called to carry. He chose to face the danger alone.

Whether they understood his decision or not, Ehud refused to expose them to unnecessary risk. This is the heart of godly leadership.

True leaders do not carelessly place others in harm's way to accomplish their own assignments.

They accept responsibility.

They count the cost.

They willingly bear burdens that others have not been called to carry.

Not every battle is for everyone. Some assignments require the person God has chosen to stand alone. There are moments when obedience means saying,

"You go ahead. I'll face this one."

In many ways, Ehud points us to Jesus Christ.

Our Lord walked to the cross alone.

No disciple could bear the weight of humanity's sin.

That assignment belonged to Him alone.

Likewise, God may sometimes call us into battles that cannot be delegated.

The First Visit Was Not The Final Mission

When Ehud first entered King Eglon's palace, he did not act immediately. He faithfully delivered the tribute. He quietly left with the others. To everyone watching, it appeared to be an ordinary diplomatic visit.

But that first visit may have accomplished far more than delivering Israel's payment.

It likely gave Ehud the opportunity to observe the palace, understand the surroundings, and see how access to the king was granted.

Nothing appeared hurried.

Nothing appeared suspicious.

Then, after reaching Gilgal, he returned alone. Whether through careful observation or by God's direct guidance, Ehud came back at exactly the right moment.

This teaches us an important lesson.

Faith is not reckless.

Godly wisdom observes.

It prepares.

It discerns.

Then it obeys.

Many believers want immediate results without careful preparation. But God often teaches us to look before we leap, learn before we lead, and prepare before we perform.

Divine opportunities often favor those who are spiritually alert and wisely observant.

"I Have A Secret Message For You"

Ehud approached King Eglon and said,

"I have a secret message for you."

Those words immediately captured the king's attention. Eglon dismissed everyone else. The room became silent. The king believed he was about to receive confidential information.

But the message Ehud carried was far greater than political intelligence. It was God's appointment with a wicked ruler. Sometimes God uses unexpected methods to accomplish His purposes.

When God is at work, even the plans of the enemy unknowingly serve His greater plan.

When God Speaks, Everything Changes

Ehud then declared,

"I have a message from God for you."

These were not ordinary words. They carried divine authority.

Throughout Scripture, God's Word changes lives.

It changes hearts.

It changes destinies.

It changes nations.

God's Word comforts the humble, but it also confronts rebellion.

No one encounters God's message and remains the same.

The Quiet Room Before The Great Victory

History was about to change. Yet the turning point did not begin on a battlefield.

It began in a quiet room.

Just one king.

One servant of God.

One divine assignment.

Many of God's greatest victories begin away from public applause.

Before there is public victory, there is private obedience.

Before God changes a nation, He first prepares one surrendered heart.

Never underestimate what God can accomplish through one obedient believer.

Do I protect those God has entrusted to me, or do I expose them to unnecessary battles?

Am I willing to stand alone when obedience requires it?

Will I trust God's timing even when I cannot yet see the outcome?

Remember:

One act of obedient faith can become the turning point for many lives.

Prayer

1. Father, give me the courage to obey You even when obedience requires sacrifice and standing alone.

2. Lord, grant me wisdom to observe, discern, and prepare for every assignment You place before me.

3. Father, help me to lead with love by protecting those You have entrusted to my care while faithfully carrying out my calling.

4. Lord, teach me to recognize every divine appointment and to walk in it with confidence and humility.

5. Father, let my life become an instrument through which Your purposes are fulfilled and Your name is glorified.
