PART 9: WHEN GOD DELAYS THE DISCOVERY

Judges 3:24–25 (NLT)

"After Ehud was gone, the king's servants returned and found the doors to the upstairs room locked. They thought he might be using the latrine in the room. So they waited. But when the king didn't come out after a long delay, they became concerned and got a key. And when they opened the doors, they found their master dead on the floor."

In Part 8, we learned that after carrying out God's assignment, Ehud closed and locked the doors before making his escape. We discovered that lasting victory requires us to close every door that could lead us back into bondage.

Now the story takes another unexpected turn. The king's servants returned. They found the doors locked. But instead of opening them immediately, they waited.

What appeared to be an ordinary delay was actually part of God's perfect timing.

Sometimes, God does not only work through miracles. He also works through moments of delay.

When God Makes The Enemy Wait

The servants noticed something unusual. The doors were locked. Normally, this would have prompted immediate concern.

Instead, they assumed the king was relieving himself and decided to wait.

While they waited... Ehud was escaping.

Every minute they delayed became another minute of God's protection over His servant. The servants thought they were making their own decision. But behind the scenes, God was preserving His deliverer.

How amazing that God can even use the assumptions of unbelievers to accomplish His purposes.

God's Timing Is Always Perfect

To the servants, the delay seemed ordinary. To Ehud, it was essential. Had they opened the door too early, they might have pursued him before he reached safety.

But God's timing never fails. He delayed the discovery until His servant was beyond their reach.  There are moments in our lives when we wonder why God delays certain events.

Sometimes He delays an answer.

Sometimes He delays an opportunity.

Sometimes He delays the plans of our enemies.

What feels like a delay from our perspective may actually be divine protection.

God is never late. He is always on time.

God Can Use Human Assumptions To Fulfill His Purposes

The servants believed they understood what was happening inside the room. They were wrong. Their assumptions blinded them to reality. How often do we make the same mistake?

We assume we know what God is doing based only on what we can see. But God's ways are higher than our ways. His plans often unfold beyond human understanding. This story reminds us to trust God's wisdom even when His methods surprise us.

Don't Mistake God's Silence For God's Absence

Inside the room...

There was silence.

Outside the room...

There was waiting.

Yet God was actively working. Many believers become discouraged when they do not immediately see God moving. But silence does not mean inactivity.

God was working for Israel's deliverance even while no one outside the room understood what had happened.

Likewise, there are seasons when Heaven seems quiet. Prayers appear unanswered. Nothing appears to be changing. Yet behind the scenes, God is arranging circumstances in ways we cannot yet see.

The Truth Will Eventually Be Revealed

Eventually, the servants became concerned. They opened the doors. The truth could no longer remain hidden. King Eglon was dead.

What God had accomplished in private would soon become known publicly. This teaches us another important principle. God does not need immediate recognition to accomplish His work. His purposes unfold at the right time.

The truth may be delayed. But it cannot remain hidden forever. As Jesus said,

"...everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light."

— Luke 8:17 (NLT)

Practical Lessons

1. God's delays are often acts of protection.

What seems like waiting may be God making a way for your safety and success.

2. Never judge God's work by outward appearances.

He is often accomplishing His greatest work where human eyes cannot see.

3. Trust God's timing.

His clock is never early, never late, and never mistaken.

4. The truth will always prevail.

What God establishes cannot remain hidden forever.

When God delays the discovery, He is often preparing the victory.

Prayer

1. Father, help me to trust Your timing even when I cannot understand what You are doing behind the scenes.

2. Lord, protect me from fear and impatience while I wait for the fulfillment of Your promises.

3. Father, keep me from making assumptions that blind me to Your greater purpose.

4. Lord, strengthen my faith to believe that You are working even when I cannot see immediate results.

5. Father, let every delay in my life become a testimony of Your wisdom, protection, and perfect timing.
