THE UNPROFITABLE PROFIT: GAINS THAT BANKRUPT THE SOUL
PART 5: THE BREAKING POINT — WHEN THE SOUL CRIES OUT
Mark 8:36
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
In Part 4, we uncovered the trap of justification. Through Kwame’s story, we learned that:
Justification silences conviction. What you defend, you cannot defeat. Saying “God understands” can become an excuse to remain in what God is calling you out of. He was no longer trying to do what was right… he was trying to make what was wrong feel right.
There comes a moment… when everything becomes clear. Not publicly. Not loudly. But deeply. A moment when the noise fades, the applause disappears, and you are left alone—with your soul.
And in that moment, the question is no longer: “What have I gained?” But: “What has it cost me?”
The Breaking Point — When The Soul Cries Out
The breaking point is where illusion meets reality. It is the moment when:
Success can no longer cover emptiness. Gain can no longer silence loss. Distractions can no longer hide truth. Because the soul has a voice. And when it has been ignored for too long…it does not whisper—it cries out.
Abena’s Moment
Abena had everything people admired. A thriving business. Financial stability. Recognition in places that once felt unreachable. She had worked hard—sacrificed, pushed, and positioned herself for success. And it paid off.
But along the way, she made choices. Small ones at first…then bigger ones later. Things she once questioned, she began to accept. Things she once resisted, she began to justify. And over time, she stopped noticing what she was losing. Until one night. No noise. No people. No distractions. Just her… and silence. She sat in her room, surrounded by everything she once prayed for. And suddenly, it didn’t feel like enough.
The peace wasn’t there. The joy wasn’t there. The fulfillment wasn’t there. And for the first time in a long time…she allowed herself to feel. Tears came. Not because she lacked anything…but because something was missing. “How did I gain all this… and lose myself?”
And in that moment, she realized:
The success she celebrated…had come at a cost she could no longer ignore.
What Really Happened?
Abena didn’t fail publicly. She emptied internally. This is the final stage of unprofitable profit: When gain is full… but the soul is empty. When achievement is high… but fulfillment is low. When everything looks right… but nothing feels right. She gained wealth…but lost peace. She gained recognition…but lost connection with God. And now, the soul she ignored…was demanding attention. Because no matter how long you ignore your soul…it will eventually speak.
Reflection
Ask yourself:
Am I truly fulfilled… or just appearing successful?
What have I gained that is not satisfying me anymore?
Is there a quiet emptiness I have been avoiding?
Because the greatest tragedy is not having nothing…it is having everything and still feeling empty.
Call to Action
Do not ignore the breaking point.
That emptiness is not weakness—it is revelation.
That discomfort is not your enemy—it is a signal.
That inner cry is not random—it is your soul calling you back.
Face it. Acknowledge it. Respond to it.
Because this moment can either break you…
or bring you back.
Prayer
Lord, help me to hear my soul before it is too late. Where I have filled my life but emptied my spirit, restore me. Where I have chased gain at the expense of my soul, redirect me. Let my heart find true fulfillment in You again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
