PARTNERING WITH THE LORD OF THE HARVEST PART 17: THE SEVENTY-TWO RETURNED WITH JOY
PARTNERING WITH THE LORD OF THE HARVEST
PART 16: WHOEVER LISTENS TO YOU LISTENS TO ME
Luke 10:16
"Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me."
Key Thought: Partnering with the Lord of the harvest means carrying Christ’s authority—how people respond to His messengers reflects their response to Him.
In Part 15, we saw that cities with great exposure to Jesus’ miracles and teaching were held to greater accountability when they refused to repent. Familiarity with truth without response leads to deeper judgment.
Scripture Focus
Luke 10:16 says: "Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me."
Jesus now defines the spiritual chain of representation: the Father, the Son, the sent disciples. This establishes the seriousness and authority of their mission.
The Principle of Representation
1. Messengers represent the One who sends them. In biblical culture, an authorized messenger spoke on behalf of the sender. Receiving the message was equivalent to receiving the sender.
2. The gospel carries divine authority. The disciples were not sharing personal opinions. They were delivering God’s message, backed by Christ’s authority.
3. Rejection is ultimately directed toward God. When people rejected the disciples’ message, Jesus clarified that the rejection was not merely interpersonal—it was spiritual, directed against Him and the Father.
What This Teaches About Partnering with the Lord of the Harvest
Partnership with God elevates the significance of our words and actions when we faithfully communicate His message.
Faithful messengers should not internalize rejection as personal failure; the response is to God’s truth, not their personality.
This also calls messengers to integrity, since they carry the reputation of Christ wherever they go.
A Balance of Authority and Humility
While this verse gives great authority to Christ’s messengers, it is not meant to produce pride or spiritual superiority. The authority comes from Christ, not from personal worthiness. Therefore, believers must carry the message with humility, knowing they are stewards, not owners, of the truth.
Practical Application Today
For modern believers:
sharing the gospel is not merely a personal initiative; it is participation in Christ’s ongoing mission
when we speak faithfully according to Scripture, we do so as representatives of Christ
this should produce both confidence (because of Christ’s backing) and carefulness (because we represent Him)
Reflection Questions
Do I approach sharing my faith with the confidence that comes from being sent by Christ, or do I shrink back out of fear of rejection?
Am I living in a way that reflects well on the One I represent?
Scripture Preview
Luke 10:17–18: "The seventy-two returned with joy and said, ‘Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.’ He replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.’"
In the next part, we will see the disciples return from their mission and how Jesus interprets their success in the larger context of God’s victory over the kingdom of darkness.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for entrusting me with the privilege of representing You in this world. Help me to speak Your truth faithfully and to live in a way that honors Your name. Give me both courage and humility as I carry Your message, remembering that I serve as Your ambassador. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Next Part Preview
In Part 17, we will explore the joyful return of the disciples, their report of authority over demons, and Jesus’ deeper revelation about the defeat of Satan.
God is speaking, are you listening?
