THE UNPROFITABLE PROFIT: GAINS THAT BANKRUPT THE SOUL
PART 4: THE JUSTIFICATION TRAP — “GOD UNDERSTANDS”
Isaiah 5:20
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil…”
In Part 3, we uncovered the danger of silent loss. Through Efua’s story, we learned that: Not every loss is visible. You can look successful and still be empty within. You can gain attention and still lose your identity. She gained a platform… but was losing her foundation.
There is something more dangerous than doing wrong… and more dangerous than becoming comfortable with wrong. It is defending wrong. Because once you begin to justify what is wrong, you remove every reason to change it.
The Justification Trap — “God Understands”
Justification is the language of a compromised heart. It sounds spiritual… but it is often a shield for disobedience.
“God understands…” “It’s not that serious…” “Everyone is doing it…” “I will change later…”
These are not just statements— they are permissions we give ourselves to remain where we should leave. And the longer you justify it…the stronger it holds you. What you defend, you cannot defeat.
Kwame’s Reasoning
Kwame knew the relationship wasn’t right. From the beginning, there were clear signs— misalignment in values, constant compromise, inner unrest. At first, it troubled him. He would think about it… pray about it… even consider walking away. But instead of leaving, he started adjusting. “God understands,” he said. “Nobody is perfect.” “I’ll fix it later.”
Time passed. What once disturbed him… no longer did. What once felt wrong… now felt normal. He stayed longer than he should have. He gave more than he should have. He ignored more than he should have. And slowly, his convictions faded.
One day, he realized something painful: He was no longer trying to do what was right… he was trying to make what was wrong feel right. And that was the trap.
What Really Happened?
Kwame didn’t fall suddenly. He stayed intentionally. This is the danger of justification: It silences conviction. It delays correction. It strengthens bondage. He gained emotional comfort…but lost spiritual clarity. He gained companionship…but lost discernment.
And the more he explained it…the deeper he remained in it. Justification doesn’t free you—it traps you. Because when wrong is defended long enough, it stops looking wrong.
Reflection
Ask yourself:
What am I currently defending that I should be confronting?
Where have I used “God understands” as an excuse instead of a guide?
What have I made peace with that God is still dealing with?
Because the greatest deception is not doing wrong…
it is believing you are right while doing it.
Call to Action
Break out of the trap.
Stop explaining what God has already exposed.
Stop defending what your conscience has already questioned.
Stop delaying what you already know you must address.
Truth may be uncomfortable… but it is the only path to freedom.
Prayer
Lord, deliver me from every form of self-deception. Where I have justified what is wrong, correct me. Where I have defended what You are dealing with, convict me again. Give me the humility to accept truth and the strength to walk in it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
