THE REDEMPTIVE POWER OF GOD: ELISHA AND THE WIDOW'S JAR OF OIL PART 5: THE DISCIPLINE OF THE SECRET PLACE — WHEN MIRACLES REQUIRE CLOSED DOORS 2 KINGS 4:4-5 In Part 4, we learned that miracles often involve movement, obedience, and action. The widow was instructed to go out, borrow vessels, and gather what was needed. We saw that God’s instructions often require participation, and that obedience is a key that unlocks divine provision. Now the story moves from the outside world into the inside space of encounter. After the vessels were gathered, something very significant happens in the process of the miracle. The next instruction is not about movement—but about isolation. God begins to shift the widow from public obedience to private encounter. In 2 Kings 4:4-5, Elisha gives a new instruction: “ Go in and shut the door behind you and your sons … ” This moment is deeply spiritual. Before the oil flows, the door must be closed. This teaches us that some dimensions of God’s power are ...

PART 10: THE BREAKING POINT – WHEN SLEEP BECOMES A STRANGER

TAKING THE CIVILIAN OUT OF YOU:
 A JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION
PART 10: THE BREAKING POINT – WHEN SLEEP BECOMES A STRANGER

2 Timothy 2:3

Endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus”

Welcome to Part 10 of our series, Taking the Civilian Out of You: The Journey to Discipline and Transformation.

In Part 9, we learned about the cost of the call—the price every chosen soldier must pay. We saw that to carry weight, you must lose convenience. In this part, we journey deeper into one of the toughest moments in training: the breaking point, where even sleep becomes a luxury. This is where transformation intensifies.

When Sleep Leaves the Room

It’s one thing to be deprived of comfort; it’s another when even the most basic functions—like sleep—are forcefully taken away. Conrad, a trainee at the Ghana Customs Academy, shared that for the first three months, sleep was not just denied—it was punished.

The idea was simple: until the civilian nature is flushed out, sleep is a distraction.

This reality isn't just military—it reflects our spiritual journey too. Jesus told His disciples, “Could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). That wasn’t just a rebuke; it was a revelation—spiritual discipline demands alertness.

The War Within

Conrad’s experience took a brutal turn when his body no longer responded to sleep. Even when permitted, his system was too wired to rest. It got so bad that they were beaten for not sleeping when they were finally allowed to!

He said, "At that point, I felt like a ghost walking in my own body. But that was when the real battle started—between the flesh and the calling."

He nearly gave up. The severity of the drill—lack of sleep, food, and water—felt inhuman. But then something clicked in his mind:

“If I survived Day 2, I’m not dying anytime soon. My family is watching. My life matters. I must finish this.”

That, my friend, is where true discipline is born—when you choose to push beyond your pain for a greater purpose.

REFLECTION

Let’s draw out five quick parallels:

Spiritually: Are you spiritually asleep when you should be awake in prayer, Word, and warfare?

Mentally: Are you mentally fatigued because you’ve not trained your mind to endure trials?

Physically: Are you pampering your body at the expense of your destiny?

Financially: Are you oversleeping in seasons of hustle, wasting opportunities?

Academically: Are you lazy with books when it’s time to sow effort?

Sometimes God strips us of comfort, not to destroy us, but to rebuild a soldier out of us.

Start a spiritual discipline schedule—wake up early for devotion, and cut down unnecessary sleep.

Embrace discomfort. Let go of the soft life mentality and embrace the refining fire of process.

Push through your exhaustion and commit to your assignment—someone is counting on your survival.

PRAYER

Lord, in times when sleep and comfort are taken from me, help me to remember that I am in training. Build in me the strength to endure, the courage to press on, and the wisdom to discern my season. Strip me of softness and raise me as a soldier—fit for your purpose. Amen.

Next Chapter: Part 11 – Hunger Games: The Survival Strength

In the next chapter, we journey into fasting without choosing to fast—the discipline of surviving hunger, lack, and thirst while still obeying instructions. Get ready for deeper fire.

  1. True discipline is forged in moments of extreme hardship. It's choosing purpose over comfort when everything in you wants to quit.

Lord, help us all build true discipline. Amen
