"Endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ."
Previously: We discovered that endurance under pressure is a powerful tool for building resilience. Life doesn’t stop at simply carrying your load; it will often test you with pressure, stress, and adversity. It’s in these moments that resilience is forged.
In Part 3, we explored how pressure doesn’t destroy us but refines us. Now, in Part 4, we focus on squatting — a physically demanding activity designed to challenge both body and mind. Squatting, though painful and uncomfortable, is a vital exercise in building endurance. Spiritually, it teaches us the ability to endure discomfort and hardship for the greater purpose ahead.
When recruits or trainees go through the squatting drill, they must hold their position even when every muscle is screaming for relief. It’s a lesson in self-discipline, endurance, and mental fortitude. It teaches that true strength comes not from avoiding pain but from enduring it and persevering through it.
Squatting represents a season of humbling yourself and learning to endure when things don’t go as planned. In life, we often face seasons of discomfort, seasons where we are forced to hold our position despite the pressure mounting around us. This squatting exercise is a reflection of those moments.
The discipline of enduring hardship — not in your own strength, but with faith in God’s sustaining power — is a crucial aspect of spiritual growth. This type of endurance strengthens you in ways that easy, smooth seasons never will. When Paul tells Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:3, "Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus," he is emphasizing the importance of enduring the squats of life.
Imagine yourself in a squat position: your legs burning, your body aching, your mind tempted to give up. In that moment, the question is not whether you can hold on, but how you will hold on. Will you endure? Will you trust God even when you feel the pain? Will you stand firm in the truth that He is strengthening you in this moment?
As you squat, you are training your spiritual muscles. Every second of discomfort is building strength, discipline, and perseverance that you will need for the mission ahead.
REFLECTION
Are you in a season where you feel the discomfort of squatting spiritually, mentally, or physically? It could be a challenging situation in your personal life, a period of waiting, or an area of growth that demands effort and sacrifice. Reflect on how you are responding to this pressure. Are you enduring it with perseverance, or are you resisting it?
BALANCED REFLECTION:
Academics: How are you enduring the pressure of academic challenges or studying for exams? Are you staying committed to your studies despite the struggle?
Financial: In times of financial strain, are you trusting God for provision and continuing to work hard, even when the pressure feels unbearable?
Spiritual: Are you enduring through times of spiritual dryness or difficulty, pressing into prayer and God’s Word for strength?
Physical: In your fitness or health journey, are you pushing through discomfort, whether it’s exercise or simply maintaining healthy habits?
Personal Growth: How are you maintaining your mental strength and resilience in the face of personal challenges? Are you giving up, or are you enduring to grow?
This week, identify an area in your life where you’re facing discomfort or pressure. Just like the recruits or trainees who endured squats to become stronger, choose to endure your own "squats" with patience and perseverance.
Academics: Stay committed to your studies and continue pushing even when the academic pressure feels overwhelming.
Financial: Work toward your financial goals with discipline, even if the road is tough.
Spiritual: Embrace the discipline of spiritual endurance, trusting that your faith will grow stronger through each challenge.
Physical: Commit to your physical health by pushing through the discomfort in your fitness journey.
Personal Growth: Build your mental resilience by embracing challenges that push you to grow.
PRAYER
Lord, I thank You for the strength You give me in the midst of hardship. Teach me how to endure with grace, knowing that every moment of discomfort is an opportunity to grow stronger in You. Help me to stand firm in my faith, whether in my studies, my finances, my health, or my personal life. I trust that this season of endurance is preparing me for something greater. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
