THE ARROW, THE QUIVER, AND THE WARRIOR PART 3: THE WARRIOR — THE ONE WHO DIRECTS THE ARROW
THE ARROW, THE QUIVER, AND THE WARRIOR
PART 3: THE WARRIOR — THE ONE WHO DIRECTS THE ARROW
PROVERBS 3:5–6 (NKJV)
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
In Part 2, we discovered that the quiver represents the environments that shape believers. The church, home, friendships, and other relationships can influence our spiritual growth. However, being in the right environment is not enough. We must also allow God to direct our lives.
Today, we turn our attention to the Warrior.
WHO IS DIRECTING YOUR LIFE?
Imagine an arrow that has been carefully prepared, placed in a quiver, and made ready for use. Does its preparation determine where it will go?
No! The arrow still needs someone to direct it towards a target.
In our devotional illustration, the Warrior represents God, who directs His people according to His purposes. While the arrow represents the believer and the quiver represents the environment that shapes the believer, the Warrior reminds us that our lives must ultimately be surrendered to God's direction.
Many believers desire to fulfil God's purpose, but sometimes we want to determine the direction ourselves.
We want God to bless our plans without necessarily allowing Him to lead us. We want His promises but struggle to surrender our preferences. We pray for direction but become uncomfortable when His leading differs from our expectations.
Yet Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches us to trust in the Lord rather than depend entirely on our own understanding.
The question is not whether you have a purpose; the question is whether you are allowing God to direct you towards it.
Consider the life of Abraham. God called him to leave his country and go to a land He would show him (Genesis 12:1–4). Abraham did not have every detail of the journey before he obeyed. He had to trust the One who was leading him.
Similarly, a believer who wants to reflect Christ must learn to surrender to God's Word, trust His wisdom, and obey His instructions.
This also carries a lesson for the church. Church leaders are called to equip believers for ministry, as Ephesians 4:11–13 teaches. However, leaders must not replace God's authority with their own preferences. Christ remains the Head of the Church, and all Christian direction must be measured against His Word.
A prepared believer who refuses God's direction may pursue personal ambitions instead of divine purpose.
Preparation makes you ready, but surrender allows God to direct your steps.
Practical Application
Examine your life honestly.
- In your decisions: Are you seeking God's wisdom before making important choices?
- In your service: Are you serving to fulfil God's purpose or merely to gain recognition?
- In your plans: Are you willing to change direction when God's Word corrects you?
- In your church: Are you helping others follow Christ rather than merely follow human personalities?
Remember, God is not simply interested in where you want to go. He is interested in whether your direction agrees with His will.
Reflection Question
Have you surrendered the direction of your life to God, or are you asking Him to follow the plans you have already made?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I surrender my plans, ambitions, and decisions to You. Teach me to trust Your wisdom and follow Your direction. May my life and service bring honour to Christ. Help our churches equip believers faithfully under the authority of Your Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.
COMING UP IN PART 4
THE DISCIPLINE OF THE ARROW
An arrow may have a purpose, a place of preparation, and someone to direct it. But what happens when the arrow resists the process of preparation? Discover why discipline is essential for every believer who desires to fulfil God's purpose.
