WHEN SCRIPTURE BECOMES YOUR PRAYER PART 9: WHEN SCRIPTURE BECOMES YOUR LANGUAGE
So far, we have been building this picture:
Scripture is God’s written message.
Scripture is God’s blueprint.
Prayer is our response.
Faith trusts what God has spoken.
But now we come to something very important:
The blueprint must be followed.
Imagine an architect gives a builder a blueprint. The builder studies it.
He understands it. He talks about it.
He even prays about the project. But then he builds the house according to his own ideas.
What is the problem? The blueprint was never the problem. The builder simply did not follow it. And sometimes, this can happen in our Christian lives.
We can read Scripture.
We can listen to sermons.
We can underline verses.
We can quote Scripture.
We can pray Scripture.
We can even have strong faith.
But if we are not willing to obey what God has revealed, something is missing.
That is why James says:
“Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says.” The Word of God is not simply information for our minds. It is instruction for our lives. Think about what happens when we pray Scripture about forgiveness.
We may pray:
“Lord, help me forgive.”
But then God gives us an opportunity to forgive. Now the prayer requires a response.
Or we pray:
“Lord, give me wisdom.”
Then we find ourselves in a situation where we must choose between what is convenient and what is right. The prayer has brought us to a moment of obedience.
Or we pray:
“Lord, help me trust You.”
Then circumstances become uncertain.
Suddenly, our prayer is no longer just words.
Our life is being tested by what we said we believed.
This is where faith becomes visible. Faith is not only what we say in church.Faith is also what we do when God's Word challenges our preferences.
Jesus said in John 14:15:
“If you love me, keep my commands.”
Love responds through obedience.
Faith responds through obedience.
And prayer should lead us toward obedience.
This is why we must be careful not to separate our prayer life from our daily life.
You cannot spend an hour praying:
“Lord, help me become more patient,”
and then deliberately choose to live in anger.
You cannot pray:
“Lord, help me walk in truth,”
and then knowingly build your life around deception.
You cannot pray:
“Lord, help me love people,”
and consistently refuse to show love when you have the opportunity.
The blueprint has been placed in your hands. Now you have to build.
And sometimes obedience is very simple.
God's Word says forgive. Forgive.
God's Word says speak the truth. Speak the truth.
God's Word says love. Love.
God's Word says pray. Pray.
God's Word says give thanks. Give thanks.
God's Word says seek wisdom. Seek wisdom.
The challenge is not always that we don't know what God has said.
Sometimes the challenge is that we know exactly what He has said, but we don't want to follow it.
That is why this series is not simply about learning how to pray Scripture. It is about allowing Scripture to transform the way we live.
Remember our progression:
SCRIPTURE must lead to FAITH. Faith must lead to PRAYER. Prayer must lead to OBEDIENCE
Scripture tells us what God has revealed.
Faith trusts Him. Prayer responds to Him.
Obedience puts that response into action.
And this is where the blueprint becomes visible. A building eventually reveals whether the builder followed the plan.
In the same way, our lives eventually reveal whether God's Word is shaping us.
Not perfectly.
Not without mistakes.
But progressively.
We may stumble.
We may fail.
We may need to repent and start again.
But the direction of our lives should increasingly come under the authority of God's Word.
So don't only ask:
“What does this Scripture mean?”
Ask:
“What should I do with what God has shown me?”
And don't only pray:
“Lord, help me obey.”
When the opportunity comes, obey.
Because the goal of Scripture is not simply to fill our minds with God's words. It is to shape our hearts, guide our prayers, and direct our lives.
Is there something God has already shown you through His Word that you are praying about—but not yet obeying?
What would it look like to take one practical step today?
Lord, help me not to be only a hearer of Your Word but a doer. Give me the courage to obey You even when obedience is uncomfortable. Let Your Word shape my decisions, my relationships, my attitude, and my daily life. Where I have ignored Your instruction, give me grace to repent and begin again. May my life increasingly reflect the blueprint You have given me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
In the next part, we will explore “WHEN SCRIPTURE BECOMES YOUR LANGUAGE.”
Because when you stay in God's Word long enough, something begins to change.
You don't only read Scripture.
Scripture begins to shape the way you think, speak, pray, and live.
Scripture gives us the blueprint.
Faith trusts the blueprint.
Prayer responds to the blueprint.
Obedience follows the blueprint.
God is speaking, are you listening?
