PARTNERING WITH THE LORD OF THE HARVEST 

PART 7: LAMBS AMONG WOLVES 


Luke 10:3b 

"...like lambs among wolves."


Key Thought: Partnering with the Lord of the harvest requires courage to remain gentle in hostile environments.


In Part 6, we saw that true partnership with the Lord of the harvest moves from prayer into obedience. Jesus commanded His disciples to go, reminding them that they were sent under His authority and direction.


Scripture Focus

Luke 10:3b continues: "...like lambs among wolves."

With this statement, Jesus prepared His disciples for the kind of environment they would encounter. Their mission would not always be welcomed; in many places, they would face resistance, hostility, and danger.


Understanding the Imagery of Lambs and Wolves

A lamb is gentle, defenseless, and dependent on protection. A wolf, on the other hand, is aggressive, predatory, and threatening. By using this imagery, Jesus made it clear that His followers would not be sent with worldly power or force, but with humility and vulnerability.

It is important to notice that Jesus did not send His disciples as wolves among wolves, but as lambs among wolves. This means the kingdom of God does not advance through violence, intimidation, or retaliation. Instead, it spreads through peace, truth, sacrifice, and love. The nature of the messenger reflects the nature of the King and His kingdom.

This shows that the kingdom of God advances not through intimidation or violence, but through truth, love, and perseverance.


What This Teaches About Partnering with the Lord of the Harvest

1. The mission field can be hostile. Jesus did not promise a safe or easy assignment. Instead, He prepared His disciples for opposition so they would not be surprised when it came.

2. Gentleness is part of God’s strategy. Being sent as lambs means believers are called to respond with patience, kindness, and integrity even when facing hostility.

3. Our security is in the Shepherd, not in our strength. Lambs survive among wolves only because of the shepherd’s watchful care. This points to the believer’s dependence on Christ for protection and guidance.


Practical Application Today

Christians today may encounter different forms of "wolves," such as:

social pressure or ridicule for their faith

opposition to biblical values in workplaces or schools

spiritual attacks and discouragement

Partnering with the Lord of the harvest means continuing to represent Christ faithfully, even when doing so is unpopular or risky.


Reflection Questions

How do I respond when my faith is challenged or opposed?

Do I rely on God’s protection, or do I try to fight spiritual battles using worldly methods?

Prayer

Lord, when I face opposition or hostility because of my faith, help me to remain gentle, wise, and faithful. Teach me to trust in Your protection and to reflect Your character even in difficult situations. Strengthen me to stand firm without losing compassion for others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
