RECOGNIZING AND DEVELOPING THE EVANGELIST WITHIN THE BELIEVER PART 9: THE EVANGELIST WITHIN THE BELIEVER
RECOGNIZING AND DEVELOPING THE EVANGELIST WITHIN THE BELIEVER
PART 9: THE EVANGELIST WITHIN THE BELIEVER
Acts 8:26–40 & 2 Kings 5
In Part 8, we saw how God orchestrated a divine appointment between Philip the Evangelist and the Ethiopian eunuch on a desert road. The eunuch had been prepared by God, reading Scripture and seeking understanding. Philip recognized the opportunity, explained the truth of Christ, and led him into obedience through baptism.
This demonstrated that God moves heaven and earth to reach one seeking soul, and that evangelism often flows through ordinary believers who are ready and obedient.
Evangelism is not just a role; it is a nature placed in every believer. Every follower of Christ carries the potential to share God’s message. Some will operate formally in the office of the evangelist, like Philip. Others will act as witnesses in ordinary places, like the servant girl in Naaman’s house.
As Dr. Mensa Otabil once said:
“Scientists don’t manufacture, they discover. It means the thing was there and they just took the cover off.”
The same principle applies here. The evangelist is already inside you. God doesn’t give you evangelism; He allows you to discover it and remove the cover.
Recognizing the Evangelist
Recognition can occur in two ways:
By the individual – You may feel a stirring in your heart to speak, guide, or lead someone to Christ.
By others around you – Sometimes, God highlights your influence to others, and they see you as a witness for His glory.
Example from the series:
The servant girl recognized Naaman’s need and spoke.
Philip recognized the heart of the Ethiopian eunuch and acted.
Naaman recognized God’s power through obedience, and later carried the testimony home.
Recognition is about awareness, seeing the opportunity God has placed before you.
Developing the Evangelist
Discovery alone is not enough. Once you recognize the evangelist inside you, it must be developed.
Development requires:
Understanding Scripture – Like Philip explaining Isaiah’s prophecy
Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit – Knowing when to speak, when to act
Boldness to respond – Obedience, even in unconventional or difficult circumstances
Love for people – A genuine desire to see others encounter God. Development turns potential into effectiveness.
The Evangelist in Action
The stories we’ve covered show that evangelists can be:
A servant girl in a foreign household
A prophet guiding a powerful general
A disciple walking a desert road
A believer living a transformed life
Evangelism is a responsibility for all believers, whether in formal ministry or ordinary life.
Key Truth
God’s strategy for spreading the gospel often uses ordinary people in ordinary circumstances.
Your story, your obedience, and your faithfulness can intersect with God’s plan to transform lives and nations.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for placing the evangelist within every believer. Help us to recognize the gift inside us and the opportunities around us. Teach us to develop our understanding, grow in sensitivity to Your Spirit, and act boldly in love. Let our lives, words, and actions lead others to You. Make us instruments of Your salvation, no matter our position, age, or status. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Preview of the Next Message
In Part 10, we will conclude the series by tracing the timeline from the Ark to the desert road.
We will connect:
Creation and Humanity’s original calling
The Flood and Global salvation through Noah
The Nations and God’s strategic positioning
Naaman, Healing and obedience
The Ethiopian eunuch, Divine appointment and baptism
The grand conclusion will show how God has always been sending witnesses, preparing hearts, and using ordinary people to fulfill His mission.
God is speaking, are you listening?
