PARTNERING WITH THE LORD OF THE HARVEST PART 13: WHEN YOU ARE NOT WELCOMED
PARTNERING WITH THE LORD OF THE HARVEST
PART 10: PEACE TO THIS HOUSE
Luke 10:5–6
"When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you."
Key Thought: Partnering with the Lord of the harvest requires discernment to recognize where God is opening doors through peace.
In Part 9, we saw that Jesus instructed His disciples not to greet anyone on the road, teaching them to maintain urgency and disciplined focus so that social customs would not delay God’s assignment.
Scripture Focus
Luke 10:5–6 says: "When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you."
Jesus now shifts from instructions about the journey to instructions about engagement—how His workers should interact with people and discern receptivity.
The Meaning of Declaring Peace
In the biblical context, declaring peace was more than a polite greeting. It was a spiritual blessing—an invocation of God’s wholeness, favor, and reconciliation upon the household. The disciples were not just bringing a message; they were carrying the atmosphere of God’s kingdom.
How Peace Functions as a Spiritual Indicator
1. Peace reveals prepared hearts. When a household received the disciples and their greeting, it showed that God had already been at work there, preparing them to receive the message.
2. Peace helps workers discern where to stay and invest. Jesus was teaching His disciples not to force entry everywhere but to recognize where grace had already opened a door.
3. Peace protects the worker from wasted effort. If the peace returned, it meant the place was not ready. The disciples were free to move on without guilt or conflict.
What This Teaches About Partnering with the Lord of the Harvest
God goes ahead of His workers to prepare people and environments.
Partnership with God involves sensitivity to spiritual signals, not just human effort.
The mission advances most effectively when we invest in places where God’s peace is welcomed.
Practical Application Today
Today, declaring peace may not always involve literal words, but believers still carry the presence and message of Christ into homes, workplaces, schools, and digital spaces. Signs of peace might include:
openness to spiritual conversations
kindness and hospitality toward believers
curiosity about the gospel or biblical truth
Recognizing these signs helps believers focus their energy where it will bear fruit.
Reflection Questions
Do I pay attention to how people respond spiritually, or do I try to push conversations regardless of receptivity?
Can I recognize when God is opening a door versus when I am forcing one open?
Scripture Preview
Luke 10:7: "Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house."
In the next part, we will explore why Jesus told His disciples to remain in one house and how contentment and consistency are part of effective ministry.
Prayer
Prayer: Lord, teach me to carry Your peace into every place You send me. Give me discernment to recognize the hearts You have prepared and the doors You have opened. Help me not to force opportunities but to follow Your guidance and invest where Your Spirit is at work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Next Part Preview
In Part 11, we will study Jesus’ instruction to remain in one house and what it reveals about contentment, integrity, and building meaningful spiritual relationships.
