THE UNPROFITABLE PROFIT: GAINS THAT BANKRUPT THE SOUL PART 12: FINAL LAP: THE PROFITABLE LIFE — WHEN THE SOUL IS PRESERVED AND REWARDED
Matthew 25:5–6, 10
“While the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’”
Devotional Thought
Why Delay Does Not Cancel Accountability
In our previous lesson, we saw ten virgins awaiting the arrival of the bridegroom. All were invited. All were waiting. All appeared ready. Each of the ten had a lamp. That means they all had something to show.
But as the story unfolds, we discover that what truly mattered was not what they carried openly, but what they held within.
Today, we shift our attention to why delay does not cancel accountability.
One of the most dangerous assumptions we make in life is that delay means denial. In this parable, the bridegroom delayed—but he still came. Time passed. Silence lingered. Nothing seemed urgent. And everyone slept.
Yet delay did not remove responsibility.
The bridegroom represents a deadline—a moment when preparation is no longer negotiable. Whether it is an exam, an opportunity, a leadership moment, a calling, or even eternity, deadlines arrive whether we feel ready or not.
What makes this sobering is that the delay affected everyone equally. The wise and the foolish slept. Rest was not the problem. Readiness was. When the cry came at midnight, it did not ask who was tired—it revealed who was prepared.
Life often gives us extra time, not to relax, but to prepare. Delay is mercy, not permission. It is space to build capacity, not an excuse to postpone discipline.
The bridegroom did not announce his arrival days ahead. The cry came suddenly. That is how many moments in life arrive—unexpected, unannounced, irreversible.
Pause And Reflect
Where have I mistaken delay for cancellation?
What preparation am I postponing because “there is still time”?
If the call came today, would I be ready?
Life Application
Spiritually
Grace gives time, not license.
Delay is an opportunity for deeper alignment. Readiness honors God’s timing.
Academically
Deadlines do not wait for motivation.
Preparation before pressure produces excellence. Last-minute effort exposes weak foundations.
In Life
Opportunities arrive without warning.
Delay tests discipline, not destiny.
Prepared people respond calmly under pressure.
Prayer
Lord, help me to value time as a gift, not a guarantee. Teach me to prepare during seasons of delay. Let me not be found unready when opportunity arrives. Align my discipline with Your timing. Amen.
