PART 3: THE ETHICS OF WORK — WHAT KIND OF STUDENT ARE YOU?

Ephesians 4:28 (NLT)

“If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need.”

In Part 2, we entered the Anger Management Class and learned that anger itself is not the entire problem. The danger comes when we allow anger to control our response.

Paul warned us not to give the devil a foothold through unresolved anger.

We learned the practical formula:

PAUSE  before you react. PRAY before you decide. PROCESS before you conclude. RESPOND before you act.

Whether we are at home, in church, at school, in the office, in the neighborhood, or online, every situation can become an examination of our Christian character.

We discovered that the Holy Spirit doesn't only want to change our circumstances.

He wants to teach us how to respond to them.

Now, we move to another classroom.

THE ETHICS OF WORK

Imagine two students sitting in the same classroom. Both have access to the same teacher. Both receive the same lesson.

But when an assignment is given, one works honestly while the other looks for a way to cheat. The difference is not what they heard. The difference is what they do with what they heard.

Christianity also has an ethics of work.

Paul says:

“If you are a thief, quit stealing.”

But he doesn't stop there.

He gives the student a new assignment:

“Instead, use your hands for good hard work…”

And then comes the ultimate purpose:

“…and then give generously to others in need.”

Notice the progression:

STEALING  ask: what can I take? WORKING ask: what can I produce? GIVING ask: what can I contribute?

Paul is teaching transformation.

THE HOLY SPIRIT CHANGES OUR WORK ETHIC

The Christian life affects how we approach work.

Whether you are a:

Student

Teacher

Business owner

Employee

Trader

Artisan

Professional

Minister

or Entrepreneur, your work is part of your Christian classroom.

The question is not simply:

“How much money am I making?”

The question is:

“How am I making it?”

THE CLASSROOM OF INTEGRITY

A Christian should not need someone standing over them before they do what is right.

At the office, can you be trusted when your supervisor is absent?

At school, can you complete your work without cheating?

In business, can you make a profit without deliberately deceiving people?

In ministry, can you serve faithfully without seeking recognition?

Online, can you promote yourself without misrepresenting yourself?

That is the examination. Integrity is doing what is right even when nobody is watching.

FROM TAKING TO MAKING

Paul's instruction is powerful.

He doesn't merely tell the thief:

“Stop stealing.”

He says:

“Work.”

This teaches us an important principle:

Christianity doesn't only remove wrong behavior; it replaces it with productive behavior.

Don't only ask:

“What should I stop doing?”

Ask:

“What should I start doing instead?”

Stop taking advantage of people.

Start adding value.

Stop looking for shortcuts.

Start developing yourself.

Stop depending unnecessarily on others.

Start becoming productive.

Stop asking only:

“What can I get?”

Start asking:

“What can I contribute?”

THE PURPOSE OF WORK

Paul gives us another important reason for working:

“…and then give generously to others in need.”

This changes our understanding of work.

Work isn't merely about getting something for ourselves. It also gives us the capacity to be a blessing to someone else.

Your income can feed someone.

Your skill can solve someone's problem.

Your knowledge can educate someone.

Your business can employ someone.

Your resources can support God's work.

Your hands can become an answer to someone's prayer.

The Holy Spirit teaches us to move from consumption to contribution.

WORK IS ALSO A CHARACTER EXAMINATION

You may know how to pray.

You may know how to quote Scripture.

You may know how to worship.

But what happens when you are given responsibility?

Do you do it well?

Do you keep your word?

Do you arrive when you said you would?

Do you complete what you started?

Do you handle other people's property responsibly?

Do you pay what you owe?

Do you give people value for what they pay you?

These ordinary things can become extraordinary tests of Christian character.

LESSONS TO LEARN

1. God cares about how we work.

Our work ethic is part of our Christian testimony.

2. Integrity matters even when nobody is watching.

The absence of supervision should not produce the absence of character.

3. Don't simply stop wrong behavior; replace it with something productive.

Paul moves us from stealing to working.

4. Work should create the capacity to bless others.

God can use what comes through your hands to become a blessing to someone else.

5. Your workplace is also a Christian classroom.

Your faith should be visible not only in church but in the way you work.

THE PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT

Look at your own work, studies, business or responsibilities.

Ask yourself:

Am I dependable?

Am I honest?

Do I give my best?

Do I take shortcuts that compromise my integrity?

Does my work make life better for someone else?

Then ask the Holy Spirit:

“What needs to change about the way I work?”

A Christian's work is not merely a means of earning a living; it is another classroom where the character of Christ is examined.

CALL TO ACTION

Whatever work is in your hands today, do it with integrity.

Don't wait until you have a big position before you demonstrate Christian character.

Be faithful with the small assignment.

Be honest when nobody is watching.

Be productive.

Be dependable.

And whenever God blesses the work of your hands, remember that one of the purposes of increase is to become a blessing to others.

PRAYER

1. Father, teach me to work with integrity, diligence and excellence.

2. Holy Spirit, remove every attitude of laziness, dishonesty and irresponsibility from my life.

3. Lord, help me to be faithful even when nobody is watching me.

4. Father, bless the work of my hands and make me a channel of blessing to others.

5. Holy Spirit, teach me to use what You place in my hands for Your glory and the good of others.
