FROM SOLITUDE TO SIGNIFICANCE PART 7: DON'T LET THE CROWD DEFINE YOUR ASSIGNMENT

FROM SOLITUDE TO SIGNIFICANCE PART 7: DON'T LET THE CROWD DEFINE YOUR ASSIGNMENT Mark 1:36–39 (NLT) “Simon and the others went out to find him. When they found him, they said, ‘Everyone is looking for you.’ But Jesus replied, ‘We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.’ So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.”   In Part 6, we explored what happens when the demands of people begin competing with the responsibilities God has entrusted to us. We looked at Jesus, who had withdrawn to pray before His disciples came looking for Him. Their message was clear: “Everyone is looking for you.” But Jesus did not allow the crowd's expectations to determine His next move. He understood that being needed by people did not mean He had to remain wherever they wanted Him to be. We established that: Being needed does not mean you are assigned to everyone. Urgency is not always...

ARISE, KILL AND EAT PART 11: WHEN GOD INTERRUPTS THE MESSAGE

ARISE, KILL AND EAT

PART 11: WHEN GOD INTERRUPTS THE MESSAGE

Acts 10:34–44 (NLT)

“Then Peter replied, ‘I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right. This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel—that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all....

In Part 10, we discovered that the Word meets a prepared heart.

Cornelius and his household had gathered before God.

They were not simply waiting for Peter.

They were waiting to hear the message God had given him.

Cornelius had prayed.

God had heard.

Cornelius had obeyed.

Peter had come.

The room was prepared.

The hearts were prepared.

And Peter was finally ready to preach.

But something extraordinary was about to happen.

God was about to interrupt the message.

PETER FINALLY UNDERSTOOD THE VISION

Peter began by saying:

“I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism.”

This was the breakthrough.

The sheet had been lowered.

The voice had spoken.

The Spirit had instructed him.

The men had arrived.

Peter had entered the Gentile house.

And now Peter understood.

The vision was never merely about food.

It was about people.

God was breaking down Peter's limited understanding of who could receive the Gospel.

Peter had finally arrived at the revelation God had been preparing him for.

GOD DOES NOT SHOW FAVORITISM

Peter declared that God accepts people from every nation who fear Him and do what is right.

This was revolutionary for Peter's understanding.

The Gospel was not a Jewish possession.

Jesus was not the Savior of one ethnic group.

The kingdom of God was reaching beyond the boundaries Peter had previously understood.

God's invitation is wider than our preferences.

THE GOSPEL IS FOR EVERY NATION

The Gospel crosses borders.

It crosses cultures.

It crosses languages.

It crosses social classes.

It crosses backgrounds.

It crosses histories.

It crosses human categories.

Why?

Because Jesus is “Lord of all.”

The same Jesus who saved Peter could save Cornelius.

The same grace that reached the Jews could reach the Gentiles.

The same blood that cleanses one person can cleanse another.

At the foot of the cross, human distinctions cannot become barriers to God's grace.

PETER PREACHED JESUS

Notice what Peter did next.

He did not spend the entire sermon talking about his vision.

He did not make the sheet the central subject.

He did not make Cornelius the subject.

He did not make himself the subject.

He preached Jesus.

He spoke about His ministry.

His anointing.

His miracles.

His death.

His resurrection.

His witnesses.

His authority.

His forgiveness.

This is a powerful lesson for every Christian communicator:

The revelation may open the door, but Jesus must remain the message.

PETER DID NOT PREACH HIMSELF

Peter had experienced miracles.

Peter had walked with Jesus.

Peter had seen the risen Christ.

Peter had become a prominent apostle.

But when he stood before Cornelius' household, he did not preach:

“Look at what I have achieved.”

He preached:

“Look at what Jesus has done.”

This is the difference between ministry that glorifies God and ministry that glorifies the minister.

The servant points to the Master.

THE POWER WAS IN JESUS

Peter said God had anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power.

Jesus went about doing good.

Jesus healed.

Jesus delivered.

Jesus demonstrated the presence of God.

The focus was Jesus.

And Peter's message was clear:

God was with Him.

This reminds us that Christianity is not merely about moral improvement.

It is about a Person.

Jesus Christ.

THE CROSS WAS NOT THE END

Peter then spoke about the death of Jesus.

They had put Him to death on a cross.

But that was not the final chapter.

Peter declared:

God raised Him to life three days later.

This is the heart of the Gospel.

Jesus died.

Jesus was buried.

Jesus rose again.

The resurrection turned the cross from a place of apparent defeat into the doorway of victory.

THE WITNESSES WERE SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE

Peter said:

“We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.”

Peter was not speaking about a theory.

He was speaking as a witness.

He had seen the risen Christ.

He had interacted with Him.

He had eaten with Him.

The resurrection was not merely an idea Peter had accepted.

It was an experience he had witnessed.

GOD GAVE THEM AN ASSIGNMENT

Peter said Jesus ordered them to preach everywhere and testify that He is the One appointed by God.

Notice the progression:

Encounter leads to Witness, and Witness leads to Assignment.

Peter had encountered Jesus.

Now Peter was called to witness.

And his witness carried an assignment:

Preach everywhere.

This is important.

An encounter with God should eventually produce a witness.

If God has done something in your life, there should be something you can testify about.

YOUR TESTIMONY IS NOT JUST FOR YOU

Peter's experience with the risen Christ became a message for others.

Your testimony can do the same.

What God has brought you through can encourage someone.

What God has taught you can instruct someone.

What God has restored in you can give someone hope.

What God has delivered you from can become evidence that He is still working.

Your testimony may become somebody else's reason to believe that God can do it for them too.

THE MESSAGE ENDED WITH FORGIVENESS

Peter declared:

“Everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.”

This is the heart of the Gospel.

Not simply:

“Jesus can improve your life.”

But:

“Jesus can forgive your sins.”

The Gospel deals with our deepest problem.

Sin separated humanity from God.

Jesus came to reconcile us to God.

Forgiveness is available through His name.

AND THEN GOD INTERRUPTED

Peter was still speaking.

The sermon was not finished.

The conclusion had not been completed.

The altar call had not been given.

But suddenly:

The Holy Spirit fell upon everyone who was listening.

What a moment!

Peter was preaching.

God was confirming.

Peter was speaking.

The Spirit was moving.

Peter was delivering the message.

God was touching hearts.

The preacher had a part, but God had the final say.

GOD DOES NOT NEED OUR PERFECT TIMING

Sometimes we think everything must happen according to our structure.

We need the right introduction.

The right three points.

The right conclusion.

The right song.

The right atmosphere.

The right moment.

But Acts 10 reminds us:

God is sovereign.

He can move when He chooses.

He can interrupt when He chooses.

He can confirm His Word however He chooses.

Our responsibility is faithfulness.

God's responsibility is the outcome.

THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS NOT WAITING FOR PETER TO FINISH

This is one of the most remarkable details.

Peter was still talking.

The Holy Spirit fell.

This means that the power was not in Peter's eloquence.

It was not in the length of the sermon.

It was not in a carefully constructed ending.

The power was in God.

Peter was simply the vessel.

DON'T MEASURE YOUR MINISTRY ONLY BY YOUR PERFORMANCE

Sometimes ministers become discouraged because they feel:

“I didn't preach well enough.”

“My message wasn't powerful enough.”

“I forgot an important point.”

“I didn't say everything I planned to say.”

Remember Peter.

He was still speaking when God moved.

This does not mean preparation is unnecessary.

Prepare.

Study.

Pray.

Practice.

But after doing your part:

Trust God with the results.

THE HOLY SPIRIT CONFIRMED THE WORD

The Spirit did not come to replace the message.

He came while the message was being preached.

This is important.

The Spirit and the Word are not competing.

God's Spirit works with God's truth.

The supernatural should not pull us away from Christ and Scripture.

The Spirit confirms what God is doing through the Gospel.

THE PEOPLE WERE LISTENING

The passage says the Holy Spirit fell upon:

“all who were listening to the message.”

They were listening.

Their hearts were engaged.

They were receiving.

And God responded.

This reminds us again:

Never underestimate the power of attentive listening.

Sometimes the greatest spiritual act you can perform in a gathering is simply to open your heart and listen to God's Word.

THE HARVEST WAS BIGGER THAN PETER EXPECTED

Peter had gone to speak to Cornelius.

But the Holy Spirit fell upon everyone listening.

The assignment had expanded.

The encounter had multiplied.

The Gospel was breaking into a new territory.

Peter may have thought he was simply obeying an unusual instruction.

God was opening a new chapter for the Church.

One man's obedience became a doorway for an entire household.

THE SHEET HAD DONE ITS JOB

Now we can look back at the entire journey.

God showed Peter the sheet.

Peter heard:

“Arise, kill and eat.”

Peter struggled to understand.

The vision was repeated.

The Holy Spirit sent him downstairs.

The men arrived.

Peter went with them.

He entered Cornelius' house.

He preached Jesus.

And then the Holy Spirit fell.

Now we understand.

The sheet was preparing Peter for the harvest.

GOD MAY BE PREPARING YOU FOR SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOU UNDERSTAND

Sometimes God gives you an instruction that seems strange.

You may not understand why.

You may ask:

“Why this?”

“Why me?”

“Why now?”

“Why this person?”

But later, the pieces may come together.

The strange instruction may have been preparation.

The uncomfortable journey may have been preparation.

The unexpected encounter may have been preparation.

God may be preparing you for a harvest you cannot yet see.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Keep Jesus at the center of your message.

Peter's sermon was about Jesus, not himself.

2. Don't limit God's grace to your own categories.

God was reaching people Peter once considered outside his circle.

3. Prepare well, but trust God with the outcome.

Peter preached, but God brought the supernatural response.

4. Value the Holy Spirit's activity.

God can move in ways that interrupt our plans without contradicting His Word.

5. Remember that your obedience can affect many people.

Peter went to one household, but the Gospel reached many.

KEY TAKEAWAY

You may carry the message, but God controls the moment.

Peter preached.

The Holy Spirit moved.

Peter spoke.

God confirmed.

Peter obeyed.

God opened the door.

This is the beauty of divine partnership.

We do what God has called us to do, and we trust Him to do what only He can do.

Never underestimate your obedience.

Never underestimate the power of God's Word.

Never underestimate the work of the Holy Spirit.

And never forget:

The harvest does not belong to the preacher.

The harvest belongs to God.

CALL TO ACTION

Ask yourself:

Am I faithful to deliver what God has given me?

Do I trust God with the results after I have obeyed?

Have I allowed my personal categories to limit who I believe God can reach?

Is Jesus truly at the center of what I preach, teach, and share?

Am I sensitive enough to recognize when the Holy Spirit is doing something beyond my plans?

Remember:

Your assignment is obedience.

The message is Christ.

The power is the Holy Spirit.

The harvest belongs to God.

So prepare.

Pray.

Preach.

Witness.

Obey.

And when God interrupts your plans with His purpose,

don't resist the interruption.

It may be the very moment heaven has been preparing.

PRAYER

1. Father, help me to keep Jesus at the center of every message, ministry, testimony, and assignment You entrust to me.

2. Lord, remove every limitation, prejudice, and personal category that prevents me from seeing people the way You see them.

3. Father, give me grace to prepare faithfully while trusting You completely with the results of my obedience.

4. Holy Spirit, make me sensitive to Your movements and teach me not to resist when You interrupt my plans for Your greater purpose.

5. Father, let my obedience become a doorway for many people to encounter Jesus, receive forgiveness, and experience the transforming power of Your Gospel.

NEXT PART PREVIEW

PART 12: WHEN GOD CONFIRMS WHAT YOU THOUGHT WAS IMPOSSIBLE

The Holy Spirit had fallen on Cornelius and everyone listening.

Peter had witnessed something he could never have produced by his own power.

The Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit.

The very people Peter once struggled to associate with were now experiencing the same Spirit the Jewish believers had received.

The believers who came with Peter were amazed.

Peter now had undeniable evidence:

God had accepted them.

What happens when God confirms something that challenges everything you previously believed?

Can God make you witness the very thing you once thought impossible?

And what should we do when God proves that His plan is bigger than our understanding?

In Part 12, we will discover that sometimes God gives you undeniable evidence so that you can no longer return to the mindset He delivered you from.

Join us as we continue our journey through:

ARISE, KILL AND EAT

Grace and peace be with you until we meet again in the next part of this life-transforming journey.

God is speaking, are you listening?
