His name was Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed man of the tribe of Benjamin. The Israelites sent Ehud to deliver their tribute money to King Eglon of Moab." In Part 1, we discovered how Israel slowly drifted away from God. Though they had experienced His miracles, provision, and faithfulness, they allowed familiarity with God's blessings to replace intimacy with God Himself. As a result of their disobedience, God allowed King Eglon of Moab to oppress Israel for eighteen years. They found themselves serving a ruler who had no rightful place over them—a picture of how sin and misplaced devotion can bring spiritual bondage. We discovered that when people lose spiritual vision, they struggle to recognize God's voice, His purpose, and the opportunities He places before them. Jesus, the Light of the world, alone can restore our spiritual sight and lead us into His divine purpose. They sheltered the broken but could not heal them. We discovered that waiting does not mean God has forgotten us. The greatest miracle at Bethesda did not happen when the water moved, but when Jesus stepped into the waiting room. Today, we begin to examine the different groups of people gathered around the pool, starting with the blind. Their condition goes beyond the loss of physical sight and reveals a deeper spiritual reality that still exists today. In Part 3, we discovered that the name Bethesda means " House of Mercy " or " House of Grace ." Yet, despite its name, it was filled with people carrying pain, disappointment, and brokenness. We learned that being near a place of mercy does not automatically mean experiencing mercy. The people looked to the movement of the water, but Jesus came as the true source of mercy. We learned that this was a prophetic picture of Jesus Christ, the perfect Lamb of God, whose sacrifice opened the way for our redemption. Before restoration comes redemption, and before healing comes the saving grace of God. Jerusalem was alive with celebration as thousands of Jews gathered to observe one of their sacred festivals. The city was filled with worshippers, religious leaders, sacrifices, ceremonies, and outward expressions of devotion. Yet beneath the atmosphere of celebration was another reality. Just outside the excitement stood the Pool of Bethesda, where countless blind, lame, paralyzed, and hopeless people lay waiting for healing. This striking contrast teaches us an important truth: it is possible for religious activity to flourish while broken lives remain unchanged.
