THE LION, THE PIT, AND THE PROMOTION PART 1: THE MAN BEHIND THE EXPLOITS
THE LION, THE PIT, AND THE PROMOTION
PART 1: THE MAN BEHIND THE EXPLOITS
2 Samuel 23:20–23 (NKJV)
"Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man from Kabzeel, who had done many deeds. He had killed two lion-like heroes of Moab. He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day."
Some people become known for their positions, while others become recognised for their exploits.
In the Bible, Benaiah was one man whose courage and extraordinary deeds distinguished him among David's mighty warriors.
His story is fascinating, but before we examine the lion, the pit, and his eventual promotion, let's first understand the man behind these remarkable achievements.
1. A MAN WITH A BACKGROUND
Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, a valiant man from Kabzeel. He was not an ordinary warrior. Scripture records several extraordinary victories that distinguished him among David's mighty men.
His background introduces us to a family associated with valour and courage.
Lesson: Never underestimate the importance of your foundation. The values, discipline, and character you develop today can influence how you respond to tomorrow's challenges.
2. A MAN KNOWN FOR HIS EXPLOITS
Benaiah was not celebrated merely because of his position. His actions distinguished him.
He defeated two lion-like heroes of Moab, killed a lion in a pit on a snowy day, and overcame a formidable Egyptian warrior.
His life reminds us that our actions often communicate more than our words.
Lesson: Let your life demonstrate the values you profess. Be known for faithfulness, courage, integrity, and meaningful service.
3. A MAN WHO FACED EXTRAORDINARY CHALLENGES
Benaiah's encounters were far from ordinary. He faced dangerous opponents and difficult circumstances, yet he demonstrated remarkable courage.
His story challenges us to reconsider how we respond to difficulties.
Sometimes, what stands before us may appear intimidating, but fear should not automatically determine our decisions.
Lesson: Courage does not mean the absence of fear. It means having the wisdom and determination to do what is right despite difficult circumstances.
4. THERE WAS MORE TO HIS STORY
Benaiah's story did not end with his exploits. He eventually became the commander of Israel's army under King Solomon (1 Kings 2:35).
However, before we arrive at his promotion, we must understand the remarkable courage behind his victories.
His story teaches us to value character, preparation, and faithful service rather than becoming obsessed with positions and recognition.
Practical Application
- What are you becoming known for?
- Are you faithful with the responsibilities entrusted to you?
- How do you respond when difficult situations arise?
- Are you developing the character required for greater responsibility?
Remember, don't become so obsessed with where you want to go that you neglect who you are becoming.
Reflection
If your life were examined today, what would people remember you for: your position, your words, or the character demonstrated through your actions?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, develop in me a character that honours You. Give me courage to face challenges, wisdom to make right decisions, and faithfulness in every responsibility entrusted to me. May my life become a testimony of Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
