THE ARROW, THE QUIVER, AND THE WARRIOR PART 6: THE ARROW MUST NOT MISS THE TARGET
THE ARROW, THE QUIVER, AND THE WARRIOR
PART 6: THE ARROW MUST NOT MISS THE TARGET
Philippians 3:13–14 (NKJV)
“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize…”
In Part 5, we examined what happens when the quiver fails the arrow. We established that the environment has a responsibility to prepare, sharpen, and position the arrow for its assignment.
But preparation alone is not enough. An arrow can be well-prepared and still miss its target if it loses direction.
EVERY ARROW HAS A TARGET
An arrow is not made to remain in the quiver. It is made to be released towards a target.
Likewise, God has not called us merely to exist, attend church, occupy positions, or accumulate Christian experiences. He has called us to fulfil His purpose.
The question is: Are you moving towards your God-given target, or have you lost direction along the way?
1. KNOW YOUR TARGET
Philippians 3:14 reveals Paul's determination to press towards the goal.
Paul knew what he was pursuing. He was not simply running; he was running with purpose.
As believers, we must understand that not every opportunity is our assignment, and not every open door is our destination.
You cannot hit a target you have not identified.
2. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR PAST TO DISTRACT YOUR FUTURE
Paul speaks about forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead.
Sometimes, past failures, disappointments, offences, and even previous achievements become obstacles to our progress.
You cannot move forward effectively while constantly looking backwards.
Learn from yesterday, but do not become imprisoned by it.
Your past may explain where you have been, but it must not determine where you are going.
3. STAY FOCUSED
An arrow must maintain its direction to hit its target.
Jesus demonstrated this in Mark 1:37–38. Even when people were looking for Him, He remained focused on His assignment.
Similarly, we must learn to manage distractions, unnecessary competitions, comparisons, and activities that take us away from our God-given purpose.
Focus is knowing what to pursue and what to ignore.
4. KEEP PRESSING UNTIL YOU REACH THE TARGET
Paul did not claim to have arrived. He said, "I press toward the goal."
The Christian journey requires consistency, discipline, and perseverance.
Do not abandon your assignment because the journey has become difficult. Do not give up because progress appears slow.
Remember, the goal is not merely to start well but to finish well.
An arrow is not celebrated merely because it was released; its purpose is fulfilled when it hits the target.
Practical Application
Ask yourself:
- Am I pursuing God's purpose?
- What past experience is holding me back?
- What distractions are affecting my focus?
- Are my daily decisions taking me closer to my target?
- Am I still pressing towards God's calling?
Reflection
Am I moving towards the target God has set before me, or have distractions caused me to lose direction?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to understand and pursue Your purpose for my life. Deliver me from distractions, past failures, and anything that can make me lose direction. Give me the discipline to remain focused and the strength to keep pressing until I fulfil Your purpose. In Jesus' name, Amen.
COMING UP IN PART 7: THE WARRIOR'S SATISFACTION — AN ARROW THAT FULFILLED ITS PURPOSE
What brings satisfaction to the Warrior? Is it simply releasing the arrow, or seeing it fulfil the purpose for which it was prepared?
