PART 5: TRAINED FOR THE MOMENT OF BATTLE

Judges 20:16 (NLT)

"Among Benjamin's elite troops were 700 select left-handed warriors, each of whom could sling a stone and hit a target within a hair's breadth, without missing."

In Part 4, we discovered the significance of the sling in the hands of Benjamin's warriors. The sling was a simple weapon, but in the hands of trained men, it became remarkably effective.

We learned that God does not always need impressive tools to accomplish extraordinary things. He can use what appears ordinary when it is surrendered to Him and properly developed.

But there is something we must not overlook. The warriors were trained before they were tested. Their extraordinary accuracy did not suddenly appear when the battle began.

It was developed long before they stepped onto the battlefield. And this gives us one of the most important lessons in the entire series:

The battlefield reveals what the training ground has produced.

God Prepares Before He Deploys

The Bible calls these men "elite troops."

They were not simply men who happened to carry slings. They were selected warriors. They had developed a specific skill. They had been prepared for a specific kind of assignment.

This reminds us that God often prepares people privately before using them publicly.

We may want the platform.

God may want the preparation.

We may want the opportunity.

God may first want to develop our character.

We may want the victory.

God may first take us through the training.

The waiting season is not necessarily wasted time.

Sometimes it is God's classroom.

The Training Ground Is Where Nobody Is Watching

Imagine these warriors practicing with their slings when there was no battle.

Nobody was applauding.

Nobody was celebrating their accuracy.

Nobody was calling them heroes.

Yet they continued to develop their skill.

This is the nature of genuine preparation.

You train when nobody is watching so that you can perform when everybody is watching.

The same principle applies spiritually.

Pray when nobody knows you are praying.

Study the Word when nobody is asking you to preach.

Build character when nobody is rewarding you for it.

Practice faithfulness when nobody is giving you recognition.

Because when the moment arrives, you will not suddenly become what you never prepared to be.

David Was Trained Before Goliath

David provides another powerful biblical example. Before David stood before Goliath, he had already spent years in the fields protecting his father's sheep.

He had fought lions.

He had fought bears.

He had learned courage.

He had learned responsibility.

He had learned to trust God.

So when Goliath appeared, David was not encountering courage for the first time. The battlefield simply revealed what the wilderness had already developed.

David's public victory was connected to his private preparation. The same principle applies to the 700 warriors of Benjamin.

Your Private Life Is Preparing Your Public Life

What you do privately matters. Your private decisions are shaping your public character.

Your prayer life is preparing you for spiritual battles.

Your integrity is preparing you for responsibility.

Your discipline is preparing you for opportunity.

Your obedience in small things is preparing you for greater assignments.

Many people want God to trust them with great things while they remain careless with small things.

But Jesus said:

"If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones."

— Luke 16:10 (NLT)

God watches how we handle the small before He entrusts us with the greater.

Preparation May Feel Like Delay

One of the most difficult things about preparation is that it can feel like nothing is happening.

You pray.

You wait.

You learn.

You practice.

You serve.

You remain faithful.

Yet nothing seems to change.

But remember the warriors.

Their preparation may have been invisible to others. Yet when the moment came, their hidden training became visible ability.

Never despise a season simply because it is quiet. God can be doing His deepest work in the seasons when you see the least outward movement.

The Battle Does Not Create The Warrior

The battle reveals the warrior.

This distinction is important.

A crisis does not suddenly create character.

It exposes character.

Pressure does not always create faith.

It reveals the faith that has already been developed.

Temptation does not create discipline.

It tests the discipline you have cultivated.

The moment of crisis simply reveals what has been built beforehand.

That is why preparation matters.

When The Moment Comes, There May Be No Time To Prepare

The warriors could not stop in the middle of battle and say:

"Give us some time. We need to learn how to use these slings."

The battle demanded immediate action.

Likewise, there will be moments in life when preparation time is over.

A sudden opportunity may appear.

A crisis may arrive.

Someone may need your help.

A spiritual attack may come unexpectedly.

A leadership responsibility may be placed before you. At that moment, you will draw from what you have already developed.

Preparation is what gives you something to draw from when the unexpected arrives.

God Can Use Your Hidden Years

Perhaps you are in a season that feels insignificant.

You are learning.

Serving.

Working.

Praying.

Building.

Waiting.

Do not conclude that God has forgotten you.

Moses had a wilderness season.

David had a shepherding season.

Joseph had a prison season.

Jesus had years of quiet preparation before His public ministry.

Hidden does not mean forgotten.

Sometimes hidden means being prepared.

Practical Lessons

1. Do not rush God's preparation process.

What feels like delay may actually be development.

2. Practice before the opportunity arrives.

Do not wait for the platform before developing your gift.

3. Be faithful when nobody is watching.

Private faithfulness prepares you for public responsibility.

4. Develop both skill and character.

Ability may open a door, but character determines how you handle what is behind it.

5. Trust God's timing.

When the right moment comes, you will be grateful for the preparation you once considered unnecessary.

1. Father, give me patience to trust Your preparation process, even when I cannot yet see the purpose of the season I am in.

2. Lord, help me to remain faithful in the hidden places where nobody sees my work, my prayers, or my sacrifices.

3. Father, develop both my gifts and my character so that I will be prepared for every assignment You entrust to me.

4. Lord Jesus, deliver me from impatience and the desire for premature promotion. Teach me to value preparation as much as opportunity.

5. Father, when my moment comes, let me be ready, equipped, disciplined, and spiritually prepared to fulfill Your purpose.
